Newsweek magazine suggested that, based on a report from the American Central Intelligence Organization (CIA), it threatened the World Health Organization (WHO) not to declare a global emergency at a time when China started to stockpile personal protective equipment from all over the world.

The magazine stated that two CIA officials confirmed the content of the report.

According to the report, China threatened to end its co-operation with WHO in the coronavirus investigation if it issued an outbreak warning.

WHO denied the Chinese leader’s personal intervention, but left questions about whether other Chinese officials are making efforts to delay the emergency declaration or change the content of the alert.

GERMANS AGREED

Last week, Der Spiegel magazine claimed phone threats on the phone with Chinese President Shi Jinping, based on German intelligence.

Der Spiegel suggested that Shi Jinping pressed on January 21 by calling Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, President of the World Health Organization, in person.

SPOKESPERSON DENIED

The WHO Spokesperson announced that the WHO President ‘met with the Chinese leader neither on January 20 nor on January 21 or 22,’ and denied the allegations.

“Dr. Tedros and a senior WHO delegation met with Shi Jinping on 28 January, and the global emergency declaration was not brought up,” WHO spokesman said.
